NVIDIA Driver Installation Guide (RHEL / Rocky / Alma / SLES)
1. Update the system
RHEL-based (DNF)
sudo dnf update -y
sudo reboot
SLES / openSUSE (Zypper)
sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper update -y
sudo reboot
Reboot ensures you are running the latest kernel.
2. Add the NVIDIA CUDA Repository
Replace rhel8 with rhel9 where appropriate.
RHEL-based (DNF – recommended)
sudo dnf config-manager --add-repo=https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/rhel8/x86_64/cuda-rhel8.repo
RHEL fallback (manual)
sudo curl -o /etc/yum.repos.d/cuda.repo https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/rhel8/x86_64/cuda-rhel8.repo
SLES / openSUSE (Zypper)
sudo zypper addrepo --refresh https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/rhel8/x86_64/ nvidia
3. Refresh metadata and import GPG keys
RHEL (DNF)
sudo dnf makecache
SLES (Zypper)
sudo zypper --gpg-auto-import-keys refresh
4. Verify kernel version
Current running kernel
uname -r
Next boot kernel (if not rebooted)
grubby --info=0 | grep kernel
Example:
4.18.0-553.77.1.el8_10.x86_64
5. Find matching NVIDIA driver modules
RHEL (DNF)
dnf search kmod-nvidia | grep $(uname -r)
SLES (Zypper)
zypper search nvidia | grep $(uname -r)
6. Install NVIDIA driver
RHEL (DNF modules)
sudo dnf module install -y nvidia-driver:580
SLES (Zypper package install)
sudo zypper install -y kmod-nvidia-<version>
7. Reboot
sudo reboot
8. Validate installation
nvidia-smi
Troubleshooting
No matching driver for current kernel
RHEL (DNF)
sudo dnf --showduplicates list kernel
sudo dnf install kernel-<version>
SLES (Zypper)
zypper search -s kernel-default
sudo zypper install kernel-default-<version>
Boot failure after driver install
grubby --info=ALL
grubby --set-default-index=1
Driver Management
RHEL (DNF)
sudo dnf module remove -y nvidia-driver
sudo dnf module reset nvidia-driver
SLES (Zypper)
sudo zypper remove -y '*nvidia*'
Check status
nvidia-smi
